Please note: A state highway is typically a numbered route, which is comprised of Interstate, United States, and Wisconsin routes. County highways are designated with letters instead of a number. The Eau Claire County Highway Department does not typically issue permits on state highways or on town, city, or village (municipal) roads/streets, with the exception of Driveway Permits in the Town of Bridge Creek. 

Adopt-A-Highway:

Adopt-A-Highway program is the official coordination system for generous volunteer efforts that remove trash, recyclables, and litter from the highway. Please view our Adopt-A-Highway Program page for additional information on the program.

ATV Route: 

Application form must be completed and forwarded to the Highway Commissioner or Designee by a Town/Village/Municipal Board for consideration before a highway segment can be considered for designation as an ATV route.

Implements of Husbandry (IoH) Permit:

An operator may apply for a no-fee permit for an Implement of Husbandry (IoH) that exceeds weight and length limits. Examples of IoH as well as the weight and length limits are listed on the WisDOT website at Wisconsin Department of Transportation Implements of Husbandry (IoH) (wisconsindot.gov). Submit a completed form to each maintaining authority or designee that is responsible for the highway on which you’re requesting permission. Land Access Driveway from County Trunk Highway Permit:

An application for a land access permit must be completed to refill or install a driveway or culvert that connects directly to a County highway. Driveway permits are issued by officials of the Eau Claire County Highway Department and are required for all residential and commercial access onto a county highway. The Eau Claire County Highway Department also issues all Driveway Permits for town roads located in the Town of Bridge Creek.

State Highways (e.g., USH 53, 93, 12): For access to state highways, you will need to apply for a Connection Permit with WisDOT. You can find more information on the WisDOT website - Wisconsin Department of Transportation State highway connection permits (wisconsindot.gov)

County Highways and Town of Bridge Creek roads ONLY:

 

Oversize/Overweight Trip Permit:

Permit to transport a non-divisible load exceeding statutory size and/or weight. This permit is for movement of loads on the County Trunk Highway System of Eau Claire County ONLY. Movement on State Highways must have a permit from the State. Movement on City, Village or Town roads must have a permit from each local municipality.

Please submit the application at least two business days prior to date of move. If the application is not submitted at least two business days prior to date of move, there is no guarantee that the permit will be approved in time for the move.

 

A copy of the approved permit must be kept with the towing vehicle during the authorized movement.

Tourist Oriented Directional Signs (TODS):

Tourist oriented directional signs (TODS) provide motorists with directional information for qualifying tourist-related businesses, services, or activities. Tourist-related businesses, whose major portion of income or visitors is derived from visitors who do not reside in the immediate area where the business is located, qualify for TODS. The business cannot have direct access to a state or U.S. highway, but must be located within five miles of a state or U.S. highway.

Utility Permit:

An application for a utility permit must be completed and submitted to the Eau Claire County Highway Department when utility work is to be performed in the County highway right-of-way. These policies apply to all existing utility facilities retained, relocated, replaced, or altered, and to new utility facilities installed within the highway right-of-way.

Completed application form and $40.00 application fee must be sent to the Eau Claire County Highway Department when working within the Right-of-Way.
