Winter Driving Advisory, January 9, 2024

(Eau Claire, Wis.) – With the first winter weather alert of 2024 issued for Eau Claire County, we encourage everyone to take a few basic steps to improve their safety. These tips are for both home and on the road.

First, if you are at a house, make sure the driveway, sidewalk, vents around the house, and any fire hydrants by you are cleared of snow. Doing these tips will reduce the chances of getting injured through slipping and falling, as well as reduce the risk of a carbon monoxide event. Clearing fire hydrants will allow your local fire department faster access to it if a fire is near you.

Second, if you are driving, check 511WI for updated road conditions. Let people know where you are going, the route you plan to take, and the time you expect to arrive at your destination. Additional road safety tips include, giving snowplows plenty of distance, refilling your gas tank more often so you are not running out if you have a delay on your drive, and slowing down on the roadways.

Eau Claire County Highway Department, along with local public works agencies, work hard around-the-clock to clear roads, but we need your assistance to ensure that is done in a safe manner!

The traveling public is reminded to exercise caution and drive with care.  Clearing a small patch to see through a windshield or rear window is not enough. In winter weather, the driving hazard that’s even worse than snow and ice is your inability to see what’s ahead. To help with visibility remember to clear snow and ice from the headlights and hood of your vehicle.  Be careful and go slow.  Use courtesy and common sense.  The legal speed limit may not be possible depending on conditions. It’s also very important Not to Crowd the Plow.  Pass plows with extreme caution and never drive into a snowplow’s cloud.  Remember, in bad weather, if you’re out there, so is your County Highway Department.

Snow Plow Driver Appreciation Day, November 27, 2023.

WisDOT, WCHA recognize Snowplow Driver Appreciation Day in Wisconsin

Governor Tony Evers has proclaimed Monday, November 27 as Snowplow Driver Appreciation Day in Wisconsin to remind motorists to give snowplow drivers plenty of space to complete their jobs safely. In partnership with the Wisconsin County Highway Association (WCHA), the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) urges drivers to slow down and be alert on Wisconsin roads this winter.

Motorists can thank Wisconsin snowplow drivers by staying safe on the road this winter.

  • Before traveling, visit 511wi.gov to check road conditions, live video from traffic cameras and possible incidents. Download the 511 Wisconsin mobile app to “know before you go."
  • Buckle up, phone down. Every trip, every time.
  • Watch the road ahead and allow plenty of following distance.
  • Most traffic crashes in winter are caused by drivers going too fast for conditions. Posted speed limits apply when travel conditions are ideal. Drivers are advised to slow down when roads are slick or visibility is reduced.
  • Stay at least 200 feet behind a working snowplow. Make sure that you can see the plow's mirrors to ensure the driver can see you.
  • If you must pass, be careful. Snowplows often create a cloud of snow that can obscure vision. Remember that road conditions in front of the plow will likely be worse.
  • Don't be over-confident if you operate a four-wheel or all-wheel-drive vehicle. They still require a considerable distance to stop on slick roadways.
  • During major winter storms, postpone or cancel your trip. Stranded motorists and vehicles become hazards that interfere with snow removal efforts.

Please slow down and give space to snowplow drivers!

Project Update for CTH CC / West Folsom Street Improvements

CTH CC / Folsom Street Improvements Project Update Letter

There is a schedule change for the construction of CTH CC / West Folsom Street from 33rd Street west to CTH TT / Kane Road. There has been a couple of items that are keeping us from bidding out this project for construction this year. The first one is a flood plain analysis for the Sherman Creek watershed. We’re still working through the approval and submittal process. Another item that prevents us from starting the project is completing all the real estate easements. We don’t have that taken care of yet and continue to work with property owners along the project limits. Until we have those items completed, we’re not able to proceed with construction. Based on the time of the year, we’re now planning on completing construction in 2024. Because of this change we’ll continue to provide maintenance to the roadway surface in order to keep the roadway passable to the traveling public.
