Description of Course

The goal of this professional development course is to promote effective response by familiarizing personnel with the ICS framework, and the principles used to manage multiple-casualty incidents. This course also prepares personnel to coordinate with response partners from all levels of government, hospitals, and the private sector. The purpose of this course is to provide the participants with the tools and confidence to become more effective in dealing with a multiple-casualty incident (MCI).

Target Audience:

Emergency response personnel (First Responder Groups, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Fire, Police, Hospital ER staff, Emergency Management personnel)

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Review the elements of an effective Incident Command System (ICS) and how an MCI incident fits into the ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
• Understand the development and management of the Multi-casualty Branch (Triage, Treatment, and Transport) by having a working knowledge of the various positions and operating procedures during a multiple-casualty incident.
• Have a working knowledge of the local/regional MCI plan.
• Have a working knowledge of the prehospital and hospital interface.
• Identify and describe the purpose and benefits of standard Incident Command System (ICS) Forms, Multi-Casualty Worksheets, and status boards.
• Utilizing the course content and working with simulated scenarios, the students will address issues relevant to incident management and NIMS.
• Conduct triage, treatment, and transport for multiple patient incidents.
• Function as a member of the incident command team for various tabletop/simulation exercises.
